Wi-Fi QR Codes: Share Your Network by Scanning

There are two kinds. A static Wi-Fi code encodes the network name, security type and password in the WIFI: format phone cameras recognise, and scanning it shows a "Join network?" prompt — but the credentials are fixed in the pattern. A dynamic Wi-Fi code, the kind made here, encodes a short link instead: scanning opens a page showing the network name with a one-tap copy of the password, and because the page is served live, the details can change without a new print.

Anyone who scans the code can get the password, so treat the printed code exactly as you would treat the password written on a card — it is a convenience for people you are already letting on. A determined guest can extract the password from the pattern with a decoder app, so use a separate guest network for anything you would not hand out freely.

iPhones running iOS 11 or later and Android devices running Android 10 or later handle them from the stock camera app. Older Android phones can scan with Google Lens or a free QR reader.

With a dynamic code, update the network details in your dashboard and every printed card shows the new password on the next scan — nothing is reprinted. A static code carries the old password in its pattern, so every printed copy has to be replaced, which is the main reason to make guest-network codes dynamic.
