The most common question staff at cafés, hotels, restaurants, and co-working spaces field every day: "What's the Wi-Fi password?" A Wi-Fi QR code eliminates this question entirely. Guests scan with their phone camera — no app needed — and connect instantly.

How Wi-Fi QR Codes Work

A Wi-Fi QR code encodes your network credentials in a standardised format: network name (SSID), password, and security type (WPA, WEP, or open). When a phone camera detects this format, iOS and Android both show a "Join Network" prompt. One tap, connected — no typing required.

Both iOS (since iOS 11) and Android (since Android 10) support Wi-Fi QR codes natively through the camera app. No third-party scanner needed.

Dynamic vs Static Wi-Fi QR Codes

Most Wi-Fi QR code generators create static codes. The problem: if you change your Wi-Fi password (for security reasons or after a breach), the old QR code is useless and you need to reprint all your signage.

D-QR's dynamic Wi-Fi QR code stores the credentials on the server. Change your password in the dashboard and download a new image — but the QR pattern itself (the one already printed on your signage) still works, because the redirect URL it encodes never changes. You only need to reprint if you want the new QR image for aesthetic reasons.

Security note: Wi-Fi QR codes do encode your actual password. Use them for guest networks, not your primary business network. Keep your main network on a separate SSID.

Where to Place Wi-Fi QR Codes

Design Tips for Wi-Fi QR Codes

Add a label to your QR code — "Scan for Free Wi-Fi" or "Scan to Connect" — so guests know what to do. Without a prompt, many people won't recognise it as a Wi-Fi code. In D-QR, you can add a frame text directly to the QR image before downloading.

Print at a minimum of 4 × 4 cm for table cards. For wall signage, scale up proportionally. Use your brand colours to make the code feel intentional rather than an afterthought.

Quick Setup

  1. Create a free D-QR account
  2. Click New QR Code and choose the Wi-Fi type
  3. Enter your SSID, password, and select WPA (the most common security type)
  4. Add frame text: "Scan for Free Wi-Fi"
  5. Download as SVG and print

Total setup time: under three minutes. The result is a smoother guest experience and one fewer interruption for your team every day.
